Hi folks,

Hope everyone is having a great Friday. Here are some of the most notable developments in the AI world this week

  • Top AI firms agree to comply with guidelines for responsible AI development

  • Has ChatGPT performance taken a nosedive

  • Is ChatGPT plugins the next App store? Should businesses invest in building their own ChatGPT plugins?

AI Firms Agree to Voluntary Guidelines

Last week, major U.S. tech companies pledged to abide by voluntary guidelines in developer AI technologies

Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft and Ope

nAI made their commitment to new standards for safety, security and trust at a meeting with President Biden. According to Andrew Ng, founder of Google Brain and Coursera, many of the commitments in safety, security and trust are vague. Companies and the White House can declare success without doing much that they don’t already do

Except for labelling AI generated content

Why this matters

OpenAI quietly shutdown its AI detection tool after 6 months citing inaccuracy.

It may prove impossible to detect if content has been generated with AI after the fact. So labeling or watermarking content when it’s generated may be the only reliable option

But only time will tell how companies will implement this guardrail and if it can be circumvented

ChatGPT performance took a nosedive?

If you think ChatGPT has changed for the worse, you’re not alone

Researchers at Stanford and UC Berkeley found that the performance of GPT-4 & GPT-3.5 have changed from March 2023 to June 2023. GPT-4 only successfully identify prime number 2.4% of the time in June compared to 97.6% in March. Meanwhile GPT-3 has improved significantly in the same task

Why this matters

Applications relying on closed large language models (LLM) such as ChatGPT, Bard or Claude 2 will need to monitor LLM response quality or risk deteriorating user experience
