Researchers jail-break all LLM with a simple prompt
Researcher at CMU, Center of AI Safety and Bosch Center for AI discovered a universal attack to jailbreak all LLM, proprietary & open-source.
Why this matters
LLM are trained with a trillions of text on the Internet, a large portion of which are harmful. For example: instructions on how craft weapon, bombs or induce self harm
The creators of LLMs then fine tune them extensively so the models will refuse to answer questions with harmful response. But the harmful data is there, buried deep inside the model. All it takes carefully crafted prompt to reveal them
The researchers originally studied open-sourced models like Llama in crafting their prompt.
Then they realized in horror that the same prompt work on proprietary models like ChatGPT, Claude and Bard. These models should have much higher fine-tuning. But clearly it’s not enough
